It seems like clearly defining a business coach would be an easy task but it is not. Some business coaches specialize in specific functional areas of a company, such as in sales, marketing, or operations and only at specific management levels. While other coaches are more well-versed can can help you with certain more diverse areas within a company. But their level of contribution depends on their specific experiences and skill set.
While there are coaching schools out there that will give a person a certificate to be a coach I determine it not to be as simple as getting authorized. You may be asking why not? This answer to this question is rather simple, while going to a coaching school can be very useful and constructive to learn how to ask the correct questions, and learn addtional mehtods, structure and documnets to become more profeesional in the arena of coaching, they cannot provide real life experience.
Let's face it if you are new to football, or any sport for that matter, and I taught you all about that sport and its rules and regulations, becoming licensed as a coach will do little for you or the team in having achievement. The reality is this, if you don't have the experience of coaching, or having been engaged in that several sport your ability to be effective as a coach is marginal. You chances of being a success and being as effective as someone who has the right experience is the same as going to the casino and gambling.
A good Business Coach is not just someone who can lay out a plan for you from a textbook, but also someone who knows what it's like to be on the field and play the game. If you have watched the feature film "Back to School", with Rodney Dangerfield you will remember the scene when Rodney (Thornton Melon) is in the classroom speaking to Dr. Phillip Barbay. In a classic textbook environment Dr. Barbay is discussing how conventional business operates, and Rodney (Thornton Melon) speaks up with the specifics of operating business in the real world explaining the ins and outs of working with all parties involved in business. The following are the lines from the film:
Thornton Melon: Oh, you left out a bunch of stuff.
Dr. Phillip Barbay: Oh really? Like what for instance?
Thornton Melon: First of all you're going to have to bribe the local politicians for the unexpected zoning issues that always appear. Then there's the kickbacks to the worker, and if you plan on using any cement in this building I'm sure the teamsters would like to have a little talk with ya, and that'll cost ya. Oh and don't forget a little something for the building inspectors. Then there's long-term costs, such as waste disposal. I don't know if you're conscious with who runs that business, but I assure you it's not the Boy Scouts.
While this is a humorous scene, it's not that far from the truth. The main point is that you will have a minimal chance of being succcessful for yoru customer if you do noth have the real world tried and true experiences to prepare you. Simply having a piece of paper from a degree does not make one an expert in the field. Expertise only comes from experience and the more experience you have the more effective, and helpful you can be.
Having life coaching skills is another critical skill that a great business coach must have. Often times people will try to seperate theri business life from their personal life but they are all interrelated. specific times a person needs to know more about how they operate in their personal life to be able to build relationships within a corporation to have success in that company. In effect coaching someone is not somehting you can learn in a classroom it is somehting that you must have experience doing. To be a terrific coach, an excellent coach, you must be passionate about what you do. You not only need the skills, the aptitude, and the experience, but you must truly want to aid somebody whether you get paid or not.
Another terrific line from the film where they stress the importance of real life experience is when Thornton Melon says to Dr. Phillip Barbay: Hard work? Listen, Sherlock! While you were tucked away up here working on your ethics, I was out there busting my hump in the REAL world. And the reason guys like you got a place to teach is 'cause guys like me donate buildings.
